5 LIFE LESSONS ON THE CROSS

The celebration of Easter, no doubt, brings us into remembrance of what our Lord and King Jesus Christ had to do for us on the cross. Beyond the celebration, have you really thought of the life lessons the whole episode of Christ’s death and resurrection presents us? Here are five of them;

1.       “Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do.” Luke 23:34

The reason Jesus went onto the cross was for Him to serve as a sacrificial lamb through whom our sins would be forgiven. He couldn’t have come for the reason of forgiveness and yet be bitter towards those who hurt Him. He needed to practise what He came for.
Most of us do not practise what we preach. As politicians, we don’t deliver on our promises; as parents, we tell our children to do one thing, and we do the contrary. And when they ask us why we’re not doing as we instructed, we’ll normally tell them, “Do what I say, not what I do.” If you want to live a fruitful life, you must be consistent. Do as you preach!

2.       “And the people stood beholding. And the rulers also with them derided him, saying, He saved others; let Him save Himself, if He is Christ, the chosen of God.” Luke 23:35

Your opponents know the power you possess. They definitely know that if you’re in your elements, they can’t contend with you. However, it’s when you fall that they get the opportunity to make fun of you. Do you remember what happened to Sampson? After they had cut off his hair – the source of his strength, they could then make him a laughing stock.
Don’t be perturbed when you fall in life. Those low moments of life will come. When such times come, it may seem your enemies have won over you. But like Christ, you’ll arise again.

3.       “And the soldiers also mocked Him, coming to Him, and offering Him vinegar.” Luke 23:36

It was at this point that Jesus felt thirsty. And the least He could do was request for some water. And what was given Him? Very sour vinegar!
The greatest mistake we often make sometimes is to ask for advice from an opponent on how to get out of a mess. More often than not, we don’t know people’s thoughts towards us. Don’t try asking for help from just anyone when you’re facing trials. Not everyone has your interest at heart. Someone wants to see you in even deeper trouble. During challenging moments, be strong, exude strong mental fortitude. Only seek advice from genuine friends.

4.       “And the superscription also was written over Him in letters of Greek, and Latin, and Hebrews, THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.” Luke 23:38

I believe without a pinch of doubt that these soldiers knew of the kingship of Christ. Look, your opponents know you’re powerful. They know you too well. Deep down inside of them they know they can’t contend with you. The best they can do is to condemn you. The soldiers’ condemnation of Christ did not stop His kingship over the world.
Don’t let people’s opinions of who and what you are prevent you from seeing yourself in the way God sees you. Their condemnation is only a ploy. Don’t go by their plan. Do you believe in God’s report of who you are or that of humans?

5.       “And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when you come into your kingdom. And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto you, Today shall you be with me in paradise.” Luke 23:42-43

Don’t try to write people off in life. Don’t see how people have started in life and draw conclusions about them. One of the things many of us, myself included, have developed is to be quick to judge people without fitting ourselves into their shoes.

I believe if you and I had observed this thief who was crucified alongside Christ, we will have condemned him to death. But see what happened at the end. You can never write anyone off; no matter how badly they started, until the race is finally over. That’s why I am an ardent supporter of the glorious club, Accra Hearts of Oak for one reason. Their motto says, “Never say die until the bones are rotten.”Until your bones are rotten, you still have the opportunity to make a comeback to God, to the path towards toward your destiny, to revive that dead relationship, and any other dead end.

WHY DID JESUS COME ?

Next Sunday is Easter and we bet you know why Jesus came. But how many reasons do you know ?  Take a read to see our reasons and see if you have more.

1.       To teach us
According to Bible scholars, and indeed so, Jesus was referred to as, “Rabbi”, twelve times in the Bible. The word Rabbi is a Hebrew word which means  ‘teacher’. Clearly, Jesus did not only come to die and save us from our sins; one of His main missions was to teach us the way of the Lord. No wonder He committed three years of His ministry on teaching us on the subjects of love, forgiveness, and holiness. Jesus’s life was an epitome of a teacher teaching His students, not only by the Word but more importantly, by His deeds.

2.       To serve as an example
It is really instructive to know that Jesus taught on love, forgiveness, and holiness by the way He lived than He spoke. Simply put, He practiced as He taught. He lived the very example of what He came to teach us. Now, that is leadership by example. The greatest leaders are not those who command their followers around while they lazy about. Great leaders, of course Jesus being the greatest, live by an example. They speak by their actions. They live by the principle of integrity. Their words do not only bind their followers, but themselves. Jesus was and continues to be an example worthy of emulation.

3.       To serve as our mediator
Which of these lawyers will you go for; one who knows the book and has the experience or one who knows the books but has no experience ?  The former, because they are more likely to understand your situation and put up a strong defense for you. No wonder Jesus came. To face the trials we face, to feel what we feel, to know and understand "our world" so that He can mediate between us and our Father. This is why the Scriptures say in  Hebrews 4:14-16 NLT
So then, since we have a great High Priest who has entered heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to what we believe. This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testings we do, yet he did not sin. So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.

4.       To die and save us
Jesus was the Lamb of God that took away the Sin of the world. As indebted as we were to the Prince of this world, he came to this sinful world (His own) to redeem us from our sins which had separated us from God. He paid our debt in full, giving us the liberty to be co-heirs with Him in our Father's (God) Kingdom.

5.        To give us life abundantly
As the Good Shepherd, He always leads us beside still waters and nutritious pastures. He gives us the peace we crave for in this stormy world. His philosophies makes us prosperous, healthy and wise. His personality assures us of eternal life with our a Heavenly Father. We no more live life passively, not knowing where we are going; we live it fully because in Him is life. He teaches us how to enjoy that life.

Did you get all our reasons or do you have more ? Why don't you share with us.

Small bite, big threats - Sanitation, Vector-borne diseases and the Ebola virus

I love Ghana, not just because I am Ghanaian or because I have spent most of my life here but because there is something special about Ghana. Take for instance her people; peace-loving, hospitable, passionate and oh, how can I forget about their good sense of humour ? There is something truly special about Ghana.

During the football season, all 25 million citizens become football analysts and during elections, they all become pollsters. Currently, the economic situation has turned all of us into economic analysts. And we do all of this with a good sense of humour. Maybe this is the reason we can still afford to laugh or smile because of jokes being shared on all forms of media, public transport and virtually anywhere two or more Ghanaians gather.

The country Ghana is so beautiful with a rich landscape and diverse culture but unfortunately the beauty of Ghana has been dimmed due to poor sanitation in both her urban and rural areas. It is not only her beauty which is being dimmed but also the inability of her populace to yield their potential as a result of sanitation-related diseases like malaria and yellow fever (known as vector borne diseases). Poor sanitation negatively affects tourism and productivity, causes the spending of huge sums of money for both prevention and curing of vector-borne diseases, and results in the loss of both present and future leaders. All of these negatively impact the economy of Ghana and perhaps Africa and the world at large.

In the years I have spent living in two of Ghana's major cities, coming across stagnant water, choked gutters, overflowing waste bins, dirty public transport, littered public places and filthy markets have unfortunately become a normal sight for my eyes. I wonder if this poor sanitation is the result of our bad attitudes towards the environment or due to the inefficiency of the authorities charged with taking care of Ghana's sanitation/environment or both. But with the negative implication of poor sanitation as well as an estimated 50% of the world's population at risk of vector-borne diseases, I believe this is not the time to call the police but the ambulance. I believe it is time to join the World Health Organization campaign against vector-borne diseases, which was launched on 7th April, 2014, during the celebration of the World Health Day.

We the citizens of Ghana, Africa and the world at large must make a decision to take very good care of our environment considering the consequences doing otherwise. Indiscriminate littering, improper disposal of all forms of waste, poor food safety practices among others by individuals and groups must stop. It is time the authorities charged with keeping our environment clean, be equipped well and become more efficient and effective. It is time sensitization on the environment be intensified in our homes, schools, workplaces and communities. These and other interventions will help reduce if not eradicate vector-borne diseases to ensure our economies grow for citizens to enjoy life to the fullest and live it, longest.

Here are some simple things we can do to protect ourselves and our loved ones from vector-borne diseases.
1. Sleeping under a bednet
2. Wearing a long-sleeved shirt and trousers
3. Using  insect repellents
4. Ensuring food safety and
5. Staying informed and taking proper precautions if engaged in travel, trade and migration as they increase your vulnerability.

Ebola Virus
Personal hygiene is even more important now because of the recent outbreak of the deadly Ebola virus. We can protect ourselves by avoiding close contact with Ebola patients, washing our hands regularly, wearing gloves and protective clothes when we handle meat and raising awareness about the outbreak.

Remember, it takes #Just1bite, though a small bite it yields big threats. Let’s say no to poor sanitation!

Four types of guys; which one would you want ?

If football clubs were women and the managers were men, this is how the dating game will be;

1. THE MARRIAGE TYPE
If you believe in MARRIAGE, then Sir Alex Ferguson is your man any day. He proudly lived the famous vow to the letter -  “I ALEX FERGUSON, take you MANCHESTER UNITED to be my wedded wife. To have and to hold, from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and cherish till death (contract) do us part. ”

Ladies, if you find your Alex, you will be the envy of other couples and people will wish something puts you asunder.  Beginnings may be tough, going through seasons without trophies will be terrible but in the end you will be happy about your great achievements. Especially when you remember that the chances of staying in a marriage for 20 years has become thinner in modern times.

2. THE ROMANTIC TYPE
Mr. Arsene-Nice Romantic Wenger is French. Guys like him will show up with flowers, chocolate and cards and leave sweet notes around your apartment. These guys will find all the sweet things you like and do them. The two of you will look cute in public and if there’s anything worrying you, he’ll sit down, talk with you it and won’t let you go home and cry on your bed.

But be careful ladies, these guys will always raise your expectations of how you wish to be treated in a relationship. They will start strong but lose momentum in the long haul as the reality of a relationship sets in. You will have no trophies for 9 years and loose London derbies to bitter rivals most of the time. Should you still date him? Yes if all you want is to enjoy the experience.

3. THE UNCERTAIN TYPE
David Moyes is that guy you simply are not sure of. Can he love you and treat you right? Have you chosen the wrong one? He may have had a good relationship with his ex (Everton), but will it work with you (Manchester United) ? For some reason, guys like this are chosen by rich girls who are blessed to have everything at their disposal but appear clueless about how to handle it. The girl’s (club) parents  (board ) like the guy and want to give him time to prove himself before any decision will be taken on him.

So what should he do? Simple, continue to woo the club and show that he can be the United to their Manchester. If he beats Bayern, that will be a very good start on this task. At this time, the girl may be considering other options. Some ladies will even think cheating on Moyes is the way forward right now. Can you blame United fans for being unfaithful or impatient? Not when they are addicted to success.

4. THE SPECIAL TYPE
When this type of guy dates a lady and moves on, you could easily say that most of those women want him back.  When JOSE MOURINHO returned to a second spell with his ex-girlfriend (Chelsea), we all saw the impact both parties had on each other. If you date a guy like this, you will find it difficult to love another man. Other guys are great, but they are simply not Jose.

Just count the number of managers Inter Milan, FC Porto, Chelsea have had ever since he left them. The real problem with a guy like this is that one cannot tell what his real motivations are and whether he is in for the long term or not. But if date him, you will feel privileged to have such a personality in your life.

FINALLY just so the guys know

  • An Arsenal lady will be loyal to you no matter what the condition is.
  • Once a Chelsea lady has been impressed by another guy, you will have to rebuild the solar system and move planet earth from third to first position before she even starts to notice you.
  • A Manchester United lady under Ferguson believes in marriage but under Moyes, she is open to dating other guys. Just be smart and  keep it  a secret.

The Ten Commandments of Public Speaking- Part 2

Why do we fear standing before a group of people to speak? Why will three out of every four people rather die than speak in public? Personal development coach, Jonathan identified some of the reasons and presents practical and useful tips to overcome glossophobia - the fear of public speaking .

Here are five practical tips you can start using today. The remaining five tips are here.

1. Your audience wish you well
No one who would come to listen to you and wish for your failure. Come to think of it, if they knew you would fail at delivering the relevant message, they would rather spend their time doing something else. The very fact that people leave all that they could be doing to come, sit and listen is enough to make you know that they recognize there is something positive about the message you bring and they are ready for it. Never think your audiences wish you failure. On the contrary, they want to see you succeed.

2. Everybody gets stage fright
I have been on radio for close to two years, spoken to many student groups and delivered speeches in my local church. Amazingly, despite doing all these for years now, I still feel that initial fright when I am called to the stage to begin my speech. It is natural with everyone.

One of the people I least expected to make a similar assertion was the founder of the International Central Gospel Church. You may think that having being in ministry for thirsty years, Dr. Mensa Otabil has all the experiences in public speaking. But recently, he said he also feels that natural fright when he goes on stage. It is a natural feeling, you’re not alone and the most experienced speakers feel it, too. The key is to manage your stage fright by not allowing it to cost you what could have otherwise turned out into a phenomenal speaking experience. Be yourself, take deep breaths regularly, and you’re sure to have the best presentation.

3. Practise is key to performance
In our first part of the series, I drummed home the point on practice. If you fail to practise, you can’t deliver a good speech. Sometimes, I feel too tired to practise my materials before going on air. And guess what? I don’t perform as I expect. And the interesting twist to a lack of practice is that you feel unprepared. That feeling of unpreparedness is the cause of fear. If you really want to succeed in your speaking career, practice should be your watch word. Make it a goal never to stage a presentation until you have practiced well enough.

4. Not all topics are for you
We all have subjects that we relate well with.  A friend of mine is so thrilled by technology that he could lecture you all day without getting tired. Interestingly, technology isn’t something I am thrilled about. If you asked me to speak at a technology expo on a technologically related topic, I am sorry, I will turn your invite down. If I dare prove to be good at it, I might get the worst speaking experience of my life.

Unfortunately, many up and coming speakers have found themselves in this trap. For a desperation for speaking engagements, they accept every speaking invitation even for topics that may not come natural to them. Expectedly, they perform poorly. Don’t go with the grind because everyone is accepting every topic. Be yourself. Figure out the things that excite you and master those topics.

5. There is support available
If all the above don’t help, then it is a good time to get support from friends and organisations that are vested in public speaking training. Toastmasters is one of such organisations purposely founded to train people in public speaking. Also Corporate MC Kafui Dey has released a useful new book 'How to MC any event'.  Check these resources out and train yourself to become the best public speaker ever.

I hope to see you at the very top of your public speaking career.

The 10 Commandments of public speaking

As a child, I showed early promise in public speaking. My contributions in class were more eloquent than those of classmates who were equally bright. Many of my classmates never opted to speak, even when they knew the answer to the teacher’s question, but I courageously did. The reason I chose to be a teacher/speaker, and now a radio show host is because I recognize my natural desire to speak in public.
Recently while preparing for my radio talk show, I was startled to find out that three out of every four persons would rather die than speak in public! Why such a huge number? Maybe it is because there are very few practical guides on how to master this crucial skill. While organisations like the Toastmasters and corporate MCs like Kafui Dey train many excellent public speakers, I look through my experience in teaching, speaking and radio to produce the first five commandments of public speaking. Let’s go…

1.  Know your material
Let’s say you were invited to speak at a youth organization, school or workplace. Your first task should be to master the topic you will be speaking on. People confuse mastery with memorizing, but that is a most deadly approach to public speaking. Imagine how embarrassing it will be if you miss a line during your recital. Mastery means researching the topic into details and making sure you bring something new to the table, because no one comes to listen to the same old things they know already. One of our enthusiastic readers, Gabriel Goku, puts it this way; “Be passionate and make sure you are in love with what you are doing. Understand the message you are sending across and that way, you will communicate it much better”.

2.  Practise your delivery
When I first landed my radio job, I was a bit nervous because even though I had been teaching and speaking, I thought hosting a radio show was a different ball game. One thing that led to my speedy rise as one of the top presenters on the radio network is my penchant to practise before going on air. Since I go on air every Saturday, I get my material ready by Thursday evening and on Friday evening, I sit behind my console and speak for an hour as though I was on air.  Guess what? I go on air and deliver without breaking a sweat. You can never be assured of master-class performance until you make practice your norm. No one gains mastery in a field they barely practise. You’ve got to know your material, and practise it. Then when you go on stage, it just becomes a repeat of your practice. It becomes “cool chop.”

3.  Visualize your success
The mind is one of the most powerful organs we have as humans. Whatever you think, is what you see in reality. So if you for see yourself giving a shabby presentation, it will sure translate in reality, and if you visualize yourself giving a well-prepared and carefully delivered presentation in your mind, you will get nothing short of that.
A day or so before your speaking event, begin visualizing yourself giving the best of presentations you’ve ever given. I do this every morning before going on air. I see myself giving my introduction lines, interviewing my guests, and concluding with the show for the day. Amazingly, I experience nothing short of what I imagined. Use your imagination to your advantage. It costs nothing to do so!

4.  Know your audience
Years ago in my first conference speaking assignment at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, I prepared material to speak to a poetry group on “What Keeps Me Going in Life.” I arrived at the venue an hour early and used that time to chat with a few participants. Through that brief interaction, I got to know what they were actually expecting for the night and with that knowledge, I was able to better tailor my already prepared material to their expectation. They gave me a rousing applause after the presentation.
You do yourself no good getting to the venue just a few minutes to your scheduled time. It will only make you nervous and you will have little or no knowledge of the expectations of your audience. Get to the venue on time and chat with as many audience members as you can. It does not only give you an impression of what they expect, but also calms you down and allows you to strike a relationship with your audience even before you mount the podium; and that is a recipe to successful delivery.

5. Use the technology
Many conference rooms these days have new technology to enhance your public speaking experience. It will be in your favour to get acquainted with the presentation technology ahead of time. You wouldn’t want to mount the stage, have your audiences’ eyes widely fixed on you, and not know how to move to your next slide. Be professional. Get used to the technology. You will not only be on top of your presentation, your audience will respect you for your professionalism.

This is Part 1 of the 10 commandments. Follow @Newaccra on twitter or Like us on Facebook to see the final part.

The missing plane, what every Ghanaian must know !

Some Ghanaians have been keenly following the mystery of the missing Boeing 777 airplane operated by Malysian Airlines. Several countries have now joined the search for the  airliner that disappeared almost a whole week ago.
Nobody asks for misfortune, but just in case this unfortunate incident happened here in Ghana, how will we respond ?

Facts vs Fears
As soon as it was established that the plane was missing, knowledgeable people involved created different scenarios - four of them still stand (pilot related, hijacking, mechanical failure, terrorism). These fact based scenarios became the main points and were improved with more information. Of course there were conspiracy theories, but they did not get popular attention. God forbid that this happened in Ghana, we would happily major on the minor and minor on the major. Instead of analysing satellite images and scrutinizing radar data, shall we not spread more exciting stories - aliens, rapture, vodoo, dwarfs etc?.  Surely we'll even take it further and blame the ruling political party, or won't we?

Experts and Equipment
Several experts from various institutions quickly got on the matter and developed the body of knowledge that we now have publicly. Professors in oceanography and related areas used the plane's last known point to analyse the area, nature of the waves, ocean current, drift  etc to pinpoint exactly where the plane might be in the crash scenario. If this were in Ghana, no doubt we have high calibre experts in UCC, Maritime, KNUST etc. But our experts will be the first to tell you that something like this requires more than just expertise or intelligence, it requires equipment too. Intelligence, we have aplenty, equipment we lack aplenty.

Assigning Airtime
Some of the international media quickly brought in specialists from all related fields -Aviation security experts, Naval commanders, former directors of the CIA and FBI, a retired pilot who knew this particular plane very well. Malaysian TV even interviewed a grief counsellor about the state of the families!  Simply put, airtime was reserved for people who knew what they were talking about.
Again, God forbid this happens in Ghana, shall we find the experts and pick their brains or shall we use the same panel of regular talk show hosts to discuss everything-  from a missing baby to a missing plane?

Finally
But in the end, we are more alike than we probably know. We will all grief for our missing family and friends and be confused about what is going on. And by the way Ghana is not the only country where spiritual leaders pray over technical matters.A few days ago, a shaman commanded the missing plane to reappear just like the Ghanaian preacher who commanded the weak cedi to arise. We pray those two prayers are answered quickly.

Have a good weekend folks!
